About The Trip

The allure of tranquillity can entice anyone.

Whether you are a college student overloaded with projects and assignments or a cog in the corporate machinery, there will be a time when you just need to get away from it all.

You will want to listen to the sound of silence, meet new people and gain new experiences that will last you a lifetime!

One look at the Parashar Lake trek itinerary we offer at Plan The Unplanned, and we are certain you will want to sign up immediately. This trek is unlike many others. Did you know that you would get to see an actual floating island?

And there is a legend behind this lake – it is believed that Bheem created the lake. Lord Kamrunag, who was accompanying the Pandavas back to Kurukshetra, was so enamoured by the place that he decided to settle down there. Being the person he was, Bheem carved a lake out for Kamrunag.

It is also said that Sage Parashar meditated at the lake, hence giving the lake and the area its name.

While those might be the legends and myths, but the sheer beauty of this area is no myth. Neither is the peace of mind and the chance to reset your vibe!

Trek Highlights

The best time for Parashar Lake trek is as soon as you can get out of (or to) Delhi! The journey to paradise starts late in the evening, which means you can do this even on a Friday night, after work. Because all you need to do is get to the pickup point and we take care of the rest.

  • The relatively easy trek starts from Baggi
  • Be spellbound by the dense forests full of Rhododendron flowers, native birds and local settlements
  • Stand mesmerised by the glory of the Dhauadhar range, Manali peak, Friendship peak and Ali Ratni Tibba
  • Catch sights of local apple orchards and small rivulets of melting snow
  • The first sight of Lake Parashar and the island within is sure to leave you spellbound
  • Spend a while connecting with your inner self at the Parashar Temple
  • Discover shades of blue and green that you didn’t know existed
  • Set up your tent, enjoy a delicious dinner and forge some new friendships
  • Wake up not to an alarm, but the warm sun and chirping birds before you head back to your regular life

The Parashar Lake trek with Plan The Unplanned will let you truly disconnect, because chances are that you won't have any phone network. But maybe that is what you need – a disconnect from everyone and everything, so that you can reconnect with yourself!

Details

In order to find real peace you have to go far away from your daily routine and that is how this wonderful weekend hike starts.

Friday we depart Delhi and head on to Baggi, the hub of our excursion hidden in the picturesque Mandi region of Himachal Pradesh. The city lights behind fade, as we go through the familiar detours to make those last-minute purchases, some quick money to sort out, or a choice of answers to those nagging mails once more.

As this is a goodbye to the Dunzo order and the supermarket walk. Even your cellular network will have a break time. Your phone will now only have one job. To capture the unspoiled beauty of the mountains.

Details

We started our journey at Baggi, located a short ride from Mandi and the access point to the mystical Parashar Lake.

The initial kilometre greets you with a rather uninclined route with massive boulders on its sides. In no time you are passed under the delicate arc of a hillock, which leads you into serried ranks of rhododendrons threaded with the shrill notes of the unseen birds. Always be on the lookout, you can come across rare species of Himalayan birds, or unearth silent villages whose rhythms are more unknown to Himachali life.

The trail taunts with varying terrains as you carry on with the hiking. There is a scenic meadow which opens in front of you and then there are the apple orchards under the wide open sky. Coupled with the fact that it is here that the hike will require a little more out of you, but the pay will be worth the hike. Slowly the splendour of Dhauladhar range unfolds itself with every turn. Spot mountains such as Manali Peak, Friendship Peak and Ali Ratni Tibba standing stark in the distance.

When you are trekking in the pre-summer season you will find these little rivulets of snow waters sprinkling their way along by your side, and the sound of them is very pretty and small. So keep walking along beautiful forests, flowing rivers and a few shepherd cottages- and you will reach the majestic Parashar Lake.

It is a mountain lake, hidden, treasures-like, in the mountains, with a floating island that slowly drifts about its middle with no apparently audible sound. Even though that movement is minimal, barely observable, it gives the location a tone of quiet mystery. The lake is surrounded with green meadows in summer and provides blue-green colors. During winter it becomes a frozen paradise, snow-covered. When the monsoons come the water floods and paints on the whole scenery a fresh canvas.

The Pagoda-type temple erected on the edge of the lake is dedicated to a sage Parashar who is supposed to have meditated here.

Absorb the magic in the evening- going around with other trekkers, finding a secret place to contend with, or being on a bonfire gazing at the evening sky filled with stars. Digest your dinner with a comfortable sleep in your tents amidst the elegance of the Himalayas.

Get up to the comforting embrace of the morning sun, the calming chorus of birds and the gentle murmur of winds against the mountains on your last day at the Parashar Lake. Chill out-walk by the tranquil water, breath in the clean air and listen to the solitude.

Once again having partaken of a welcoming hot breakfast, we start down our descent. The 3-hours downhill hike to Baggi gives you an alternative view of the landscape you had just passed over the day before-this time more familiar, more personal.

We leave Baggi at 3pm, back to Delhi, with the silence of the lake and the laughter of bonfires and memories of a good weekend. Late at night expect to arrive in Delhi, physically exhausted, but soulfully revived.

The range of daytime temperatures will be 13–18 degrees celsius, while the nighttime temperature range will be 0–7 degrees celsius.

Snow can be found on the trail between December and March if you're hiking. Even without snow, this is a great journey to take.

Any time of year is suitable for this hike. Between December and March, Prashar Lake is a fantastic journey to take if snow is what you're after.

Yes, taking a woman on this walk is entirely safe. There are modest villages there, and the walk is not difficult.

On the trek, toilet tents will be available to you. Wet wipes are not biodegradable, therefore please do not use them. There won't be a bathroom available during the walk.

Likely, you'll only get a sporadic BSNL signal. Please let worried family members know about the trek's limited connectivity.

Although you may complete this walk at any time of the year, the greatest times are in January and February when the lake is nearly frozen and completely covered with snow. Being in uninhabited hills, with the snowy white blanket adorning everything in sight and the chill in the air making you feel all the more alive, has a special allure.

For convenience, it is advised to go from Delhi to Mandi (which takes less time) on the same day that you depart for Prashar Lake. Given that it is on the way to Manali, Mandi offers excellent road accessibility as well as numerous public transportation choices. By Air: Bhuntar, which is 60 KM away from Prashar Lake, has the closest airport. To travel to Mandi, you will need to take a cab or bus. However, it will be advisable to take the cab straight to Baggi village if you don't have any plans to explore Mandi. Given regional weather variations and the airport's poor connectivity, there may be delays in operations. By Train: There are no direct trains from Delhi or Shimla to Mandi. You can, however, travel the Shatabdi to Chandigarh and then either hire a cab or take a bus to Mandi. You can also get to the train station at Joginder Nagar. By Road: The following is the path you would use to get to Prashar Lake from Delhi. Sonipat, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Chandigarh, Sundernagar, and Mandi are the order of events. All buses leaving Delhi for Manali will get off at Mandi. Tickets can be purchased through HRTC or Redbus. There are a variety of alternatives, including non-AC, semi-sleeper, Volvo, and even Mercedes buses. However, I'll advise you to use an HPTDC or HRTC bus rather than a private one because they are more dependable and secure. The bus fares are between Rs. 530 and Rs. 1400.
