Coorg Nelji Hill Trek – A Hidden Trail into the Heart of Kodagu
When most people think of Coorg, they picture cozy coffee estates, luxury stays, and the popular town of Madikeri. But Coorg — or Kodagu — is a district rich in natural wonders that go far beyond the usual postcards. The Coorg Nelji Hill Trek is our invitation to explore that untouched side.
Set near the quiet village of Nelji, this offbeat trail takes you on a journey through one of the most enchanting forest-grassland landscapes in the Western Ghats. You begin your walk under the dense canopy of shola forests, where beams of sunlight filter through ancient trees and the air hums with birdsong. Then, as if nature flips a switch, you find yourself out in open, breezy grasslands with sweeping views of blue hills on the horizon.
These transitions aren't just beautiful — they're ecologically rare. The shola ecosystem is home to an incredible variety of endemic species, and walking through them feels like stepping into a living, breathing nature documentary. You may spot birds like sunbirds and wagtails, or even come across signs of elephants in the area.
The trek culminates in a stunning ridge walk, where you’re flanked by the towering Brahmagiri range on one side and the mighty Tadiandamol peak on the other. At the summit, you're surrounded by an ocean of green — the kind of view that makes you stop, breathe deep, and feel completely alive.
Back at base, the charm doesn’t end. The homestay is nestled within a serene coffee estate, with a clear stream flowing gently behind it — the perfect place to rest, reflect, and reconnect.
The Coorg Nelji Hill Trek isn’t just another weekend escape. It’s a chance to discover the raw, wild side of Coorg — the side most travelers miss.

Wake up to the crisp mountain air as you arrive at our serene homestay nestled amidst Coorg’s rolling hills around 6:00 AM. After freshening up, enjoy a traditional Coorg-style breakfast that fuels you for the adventure ahead. By 7:30 AM, we set off for a short but scenic jeep ride (2 km) through coffee estates to reach the trek starting point.
The Coorg Nelji Hill Trek begins with a gentle ascent through the enchanting Shola forests, a signature landscape of the Western Ghats. The trail is surrounded by dense foliage, mist-laden trees, and the soft sounds of forest life. As you walk deeper into the forest, sunlight occasionally pierces through the canopy, creating surreal patterns on the forest floor. This 10 km round trip trek takes about 7 to 8 hours, gradually gaining altitude from 3,000 ft to 5,240 ft. The trail is classified as Easy-Moderate, making it suitable for beginners with decent fitness, yet equally rewarding for seasoned trekkers.
As you ascend, the forest eventually gives way to wide open grasslands offering breathtaking panoramic views. By midday, we reach the summit — a peaceful ridgeline with expansive views of the Brahmagiri range on one side and Tadiandamol, Coorg’s tallest peak, on the other. Here, we pause to relish our packed lunch and soak in the silence, the scenery, and the serenity.
We begin our descent by early afternoon, retracing our path back through the forested slopes. Expect to reach the homestay by around 4:00 PM, where warm evening snacks and a cozy space to unwind await you. Before the day ends, we take a moment to reflect — a guided quiet time to reconnect with yourself and nature through simple yet meaningful activities designed to deepen your trek experience.
As the sun sets behind the hills, gather around for a wholesome Coorg special dinner, and let the calm of the hills ease you into restful sleep.
