It’s time to leave the road and take the trails toward rejuvenation with the ultimate beauty of Kunti Betta. Trek up the hill and witness a sunrise that will renew the life in you. Though leaving the road is not that easy here’s just a small route to enter the trails, a 130 km drive on the Mysore road towards Mandya and then a right turn, past sugar cane plantations with the characteristic smell of jaggery plants, will take you to Pandavapura. The Pandavas are said to have ended their 14-year long exile here, hence the name Pandavapura. With its steep rock faces and a stone pillar on its summit, Kunti Betta (950 m) is hard not to notice from here. A short drive from Pandavapura to the temple at the base, and then a stair climb and you are on the trail to Kunti Betta.
With its challenging yet interesting trails, naturally sheltered summit and close proximity to the Thonnur lake (you can trek down to the lake for a dip), Kunti Betta is an excellent trek for both the absolute novice* hoping to take up serious trekking, as well as for the seasoned trekker wanting to do a more laid back trek over the weekend.
Located around 130 kms from Bangalore in Pandavapura, in the Mandya district of Karnataka, Kunti Betta holds immense importance as per Hindu mythology and is believed to be the place where the Pandavas along with their mother Kunti ended their 14-year exile. The hills were later named after Kunti and the surrounding region after her five sons. A temple located at its foothills also makes it a prominent pilgrimage destination. At an elevation of 2882 meters above sea level, Kunti Betta consists of two hillocks with steep rock faces and takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour to cover the roughly 2 km hike towards the peak.
Your journey with Plan The Unplanned towards Kunti Betta starts early as 5 AM from your respective pick-up points from Bangalore. Make sure you get adequate sleep the night before as the almost four-hour-long bus ride towards Pandavapura will be over before you know it, thanks to our fun and charismatic trek leads. We’ll only be stopping for a short breakfast stop along the way where you can also do some quick freshening up before reaching our destination for the day.
Once there, your trek leads will give you a short briefing about the trail and our strict no litter policy before commencing the hike towards the peak. The initial stretch consists of climbing up a flight of around 100 stairs past the temple at the base followed by a short walk towards the starting point of the trail. The actual ascend starts from here and involves maneuvering over massive boulders and tricky slopes and offers an adventurous climb suitable even for the novice trekker.
The Kunti Betta peak is the higher of the two hillocks and is marked by a pillar that can be seen from afar and requires one to climb over and down the initial false peak. The peak offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding sugarcane and paddy fields. One can also spot the magnificent Thonnur lake located close by. Once here, give your tired legs some well-deserved rest and reenergize yourselves with a hearty packed lunch and take in the breathtaking vistas. Our trek leads also have some exciting challenges for you to try out before starting your descend back to the base. We then resume our journey back to Bangalore and expect to reach back around 8 PM.
Kunti Betta is a relatively easy hike suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike and offers a great opportunity to spend a day amidst nature along with some good company courtesy of Plan The Unplanned.

A bad knee and a long gap after having forced the body to get out of its comfort zone , I was skeptic about doing the Kunti Betta sunrise trek / solo trip . But it turned out to be a great experience . Joined by a friendly group of trekkers I dint feel like I was on a solo trip . The trek leads Vaibhav and Jaidev gave the confidence that I am under the guidance of experienced trekkers . Absolute task masters were they , making explore their potential by prodding and pushing them to cross difficult trails including leaps and jumps across rocks.
The trek leads made possible things that people otherwise would have shunned to do!! Thanks to the stories of their experiences that kept us engaged and brought us closer ! An otherwise boring , sloppy weekend transformed into a great adventurous memorable one !!!
PTU guys organized the trek amazingly well. This was the first trek from Bangalore after corona lock-down, a day trek to Kuntibetta. They are following safety guidelines and taking only limited number of people, using masks and sanitizer for safety. There is proper planning for the journey and the tour leaders are supportive at every moment. We had a great fun time and made new friends. The organizers never failed to engage the group in entertaining activities.
Kunti Betta Sunrise Trek (Jan 18-19) : It was an excellent trek, good for beginners who wants to start trekking. A bit challenging at certain points but with some good leads like Jaidev and Vaibhav will be able to complete the trek successfully. View from the top is awesome. Away from Bengaluru traffic and chaos, one of the best getaways for a weekend. Being skeptical about trekking groups we had chosen Plantheunplanned and glad we chose them. Everything was on time, leads were very supportive and friendly, breakfast was good. I would totally prefer Plantheunplanned from now on.
I had been to Kunti betta trek with PTU and it was really an amazing experience. The way it was organized for us, the way both the trek leads Jaydev and Vaibhav led us and helped us in completing the trek was amazing. We really got to enjoy every view from top of the hill. I would prefer both the place and the PTU for everyone.
