Located just 186 km from Goa, Honnavar port town stands different in style, culture and history in all respects. While Goa is commercialised and sees tourists flocking from all directions, Honnavar still boasts of traditions sprinkled all over it. It is a quaint town with immense history, varied landscapes, rich culture, and simplicity.
Lying on the bank of the Arabian Sea, this town has attracted and absorbed the culture of different people from countries like Portugal, England and the Netherlands that came here for trade. Apart from the human impact, the natural setting of Mangrove Forest sets the town apart. You will also get to see the Konkan Railway line passing through it.
The town lies at a phenomenal location that forms an estuary: the Arabian Sea at the west and Sharavathi River at the south. Along with that, the estuary includes multiple islands, separated from each other but all primarily identical. Surprisingly, the Sharavathi River forms the famous Jog Falls. Agriculture and fishery are evergreen contributors to the economy of Honnavar. Although the Roof Tile industry is declining, it still prospers with beekeeping and Cashew nut processing.
With that being said, this port town is a must-see for it holds so many opportunities for the future. Plan the Unplanned holds particular interest with this port town and would like you to see and experience the same. Day 0: Commence the journey from Bengaluru to Honnavar.
Following are the pick-up points & timings:
An overnight bus journey of 450 km commences from Bangalore to Honnavar. We shall have a brief orientation followed by a fun-filled ice-breaking session where you will get to know your fellow trippers better.
We will freshen up and have a fulfilling breakfast. The Bangara Kusuma waterfall expedition will start at 9 am. The waterfall is 41 km from Honnavar; we’ll leave for the base via a vehicle.
Bangara Kusuma waterfall falls from an approximate height of 35 feet. Passing amidst hilltops at Gair Goppa, this waterfall offers a spectacular view. After trekking for 1 km inside the forest, we will reach the base of the falls, where we will play, rest and spend some moments of togetherness.
After this, we will return to the base, refresh and have lunch. The evening is for exploring Apsarakonda. Apsara means ‘Angles’ and Konda means ‘Pond’ that translates to the ‘Pond of Angles’. In the evening, we will take a stroll at the Apsarakonda waterfall and Marine Park. Subsequently, we will go to the beach and relish the rest of the day with fantastic weather and golden sands.
After returning and consuming dinner, we will sleep in tents to regain strength for the next day.
Day 2 starts with freshening up and breakfast. As the day begins to rise, we will go on an Unexplored Waterfall Expedition. The trek is 2 km in length, and after reaching the waterfall, having snacks, living and realising moments, we will come back to the stay point. Lunch will be served at the base.
Ulteriorly, a 1.5 km fun-filled Ramanagindi beach cliff trek begins. You might have done many treks earlier, but this cliff trek is a beautiful and relaxing one in Bettageri. From one side, the fearful breeze of the Arabian Sea will catch you, and from the other, the pristine, heavenly views will push you to the front with magical charm. The beach is serene with less crowd and warm weather. You can even take a dip in the water and play with the waves.
By 6:00 pm, we will conclude the trip, pack up and depart in our respective vehicles.
